Who wants to name their band after a specific clothing? Just ask singer Mayer Hawthorne and producer Jake One that question as the two came together to form Tuxedo after a series of collaboration.  It’s a strange name for a duo to name their group after a classy piece of attire, but once you listen to their self-titled debut, it will make sense.

With sounds of ’80s disco fusing with ’70s funk, the record is a party record from that time period made in modern time. Singles such as “Do It” and “So Good” highlights those decades with its funky bass lines and guitar riffs where “Number One” pays homage to the late Nate Dogg’s “Ain’t No Fun.”

The duo released a remixed version of the LP and one of its highlights is the opening track, “The Right Time (Kaytranada Remix). Where the original has a groovy guitar riff and bass line, Montreal-based DJ Kaytranada trades those riffs and synthesizer for a snare and kick drums sound with a trace of keyboard, bringing a hip hop element to the record. It still contains a groove, but it’s slowed down to create the hip hop vibe. It’s a track I feel most break dancers can dance to or non-dancers can bop their head in their cars. It also has a house element to it as well with the BPM being toned down from the original.

The animated music video highlights the BPM with the buildings moving all along with the rhythm and Hawthorne’s vocals.
